It was only in casual conversation with a Canadian in Whitehorse that I got to know about the islands off Vancouver. The descriptions and later what I read about them on the British Columbia website, had me all excited ! The two islands that has been recommended to me were Gabriola and Salt Spring Island.
After spending 3 days at Vancouver I headed to the Horseshoe Bay Terminus to take the ferry to Nanaimo on Vancouver island and then take another ferry to Gabriola.
The ride over the hills of West Vancouver was amazing, and it was certainly a very expensive piece of real estate. Beautiful homes adorned the hillside with gorgeous views of the ocean.
I was mighty impressed by the size of the BC ferries. They were truly modern, comfortable and had great amenities like cafes, restuarants and wifi. The bike was easily parked in the main hold.
An hour and a half later I was in Nanaimo from where I took the ferry to Gabriola. By 4 pm, I had pitched my tent at the Decanso Bay Regional Park. It was empty and I was the only occupant which is always a great feeling but as the night falls, it feels a bit uneasy as well. My tent site was right at the edge of the island near the sea and I could hear waves crashing and logs of wood being smashed all night.
