After bidding adieu to Jim and Angela, and locking their home, Keith and I departed from Cannon Beach. Keith was a much stronger rider and was far ahead of me in the first half hour itself. I cycled at my own pace and reached the hurricane hit town of Manzanita. A few homes had borne the brunt of the gale and were severely damaged. The town did not have power so the local grocery store was selling everything perishable on a discount. In a corner a tin can lay collecting donations for those who had lost their homes. After making a small donation I pedaled off again. By the afternoon I was struck by very heavy rain. As I moved on, a young couple stopped by and said they wanted to make a contribution towards my journey and they handed me a 2o usd bill. I was really surprised and moved. They were from Italy and were excited to see a solo touring cyclist on the road.
I reached Barview jetty campground around four in the afternoon after halting for coffee a few times. My last stop had been at Grumpy’s cafe in Rockaway Beach. I had walked in soaked to the skin and walked out with a steaming cup of coffee leaving a trail of rainwater behind on the floor of the cafe!
Getting a spot to camp at Barview was easy. It was the end of the season so the campground was practically deserted. I took a 15 USD site and camped there for the night.
